In some uses, the definition of a tree can be narrower, including only woody plants with secondary growth, plants that are usable as wood or plants above a specified height. Trees are not a taxonomic group, but they include a variety of plant species that have independently evolved a trunk and woody branches as a way of tower over other plants to compete for sunlight. In looser senses, the highest palms, tree ferns, bananas and bambus are also trees. Trees tend to be long life, some reaching several thousand years. The highest known tree, a red wood coast called Hyperion, is 115.6 m (379 ft) high. The trees have been in existence for 370 million years. It is estimated that there are just over 3 billion mature trees in the world. A tree typically has many secondary branches supported clear from the ground by the trunk. This trunk usually contains woody tissue for strength, and vascular tissue to carry materials from one part of the tree to another. For most trees it is surrounded by a layer of bark that serves as a protective barrier. Under the ground, the roots branch and extend widely; they serve to anchor the tree and extract moisture and nutrients from the ground. Above the ground, branches are divided into smaller branches and shoots. Brotes usually carry leaves, which capture light energy and turn it into sugars by photosynthesis, providing food for tree growth and development. Flowers and fruits may also be present, but some trees, such as confers, have pollen cones and seed cones; others, like the ferns of the trees, produce spores instead. Trees play an important role in reducing erosion and climate moderation. They remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store large amounts of carbon in their tissues. Trees and forests provide a habitat for many species of animals and plants. Tropical forests are one of the world's most biodiverse habitats. The trees provide shade and shelter, wood for construction, fuel for kitchen and heating, and fruit for feeding, as well as having many other uses. In parts of the world, forests are shrinking as trees are cleaned to increase the amount of land available for agriculture. Because of their longevity and usefulness, the trees have always been venerated, with sacred forests in various cultures, and play a role in many of the mythologies of the world. Flora is the plant life that occurs in a particular region or time, usually the natural or indigenous plant life. The corresponding term for animal life is fauna. Flora, fauna and other forms of life such as fungi are collectively called biota. Sometimes bacteria and fungi are also called flora, as in the terms of intestinal flora or skin flora.
